Last year I came out as trans/non-binary, and immediately changed my name socially because I realized that my birth name had been triggering dysphoria in me for years. I've been using my new name - River Rowan Phoenix - ever since.
Last December, I spoke with my university and asked what could be done to change my name in their records, and I was told that there was no way for them to change my name in the system or to even add my prefferred name to my account in any way unless I was to begin the process of having my name legally changed. The problem is that where I live in northern Indiana, USA, the process for a legal name change is not only incredibly complex, but also staggeringly expensive. And I start classes back up in the fall, so I'm on a bit of a time crunch.
You see, not being able to have my name added to the system at my university means that when I go to class and they do role call on the first day of every class, my birth name will be announced to everyone. Also my account login will have my birth name used to create the username, and once logged in, my birth name will be displayed at the top of my screen in big bold text.
To give perspective on that, I can't even carry my ID around with me because seeing my birth name - even by accident - sends a wave of dysphoria through me that is powerful enough to make me feel physically sick, and often times makes me dissociate and forget periods of time. That's not particularly something I want happening when I'm trying to learn.
So I'm selling these quirky shirts in an attempt to raise the money I need to get my legal name change filed for as soon as possible. Purchasing one of these shirts will help me tremendously, but if you don't have the extra funds to puchase one, it would also be a huge help to share this fundraiser! You can also directly donate funds, as well! Thanks so much for your support!
