Hi. It's Smush's mom, Shannon.
As most of you who follow Smushie know, I recently went to Puerto Rico with Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine. Because of my photography/videography work in the animal welfare community, I have come to know many veterinary students who have come through this amazing program. In fact, Lindsey, who saved Smush's life graduated from this program and is now a shelter veterinarian in Jacksonville, Florida. When I found out that the program is completely funded by grants and donations, I couldn't believe it - so I decided to set up a fundraiser through GoFundMe and because of Smush's fans, we raised over 3000! I am now able to start the Smush Official Shelter Medicine Fund at the University of Florida! Thank you to EVERYONE who donated to this important program! Learn more about the program, here. I will update when we have a link to the University's donation page, too.
I have been blessed to know some of the most hard working shelter veterinarians and animal welfare professionals who not only teach in the classroom or give lectures - but actually go into the shelters and do the work - like spaying/neutering, vaccinating - and by working side-by-side with shelter staff. They lead by example and I will do whatever I can to help support them.
My trip to Puerto Rico changed my life - and I even brought home my own little sato dog, Rico (who most of you have seen on Smush's social media accounts). I visited multiple shelters there and I fell in love with the two women who run the Santuario de Animales San Francisco de Asís in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. I want to continue to fundraise for them and for others like them in the United States not just by raising money, but by creating videos and taking photos to help them get their mission out into the world. Most rescues/animal welfare organizations don't have the money to hire a professional photographer to come to their location to help them with their marketing efforts. That's where I come in...I want to use Smush's fame for good.
We are a 501(c)3 non profit foundation.
Keep being kind and spreading goodness.
